The Next Big Thing Downtown

Construction Plan & Timeline

Crews are taking a "get in, get out" approach by working in three- to four-block segments, speeding the pace of construction, limiting activity in front of businesses and maintaining pedestrian and parking access.

Get in, get out: 3-4 blocks at a time

  • In addition to utility relocation work scheduled through 2007, light rail construction will generally occur in three- to four-block work zones, lasting up to eight weeks. Work in some zones may last longer to accommodate unique circumstances such as school schedules. (To stay informed about schedule changes, sign up for weekly construction updates.)
  • Crews are working in three work zones simultaneously—one in each of the North, Central and South mall areas.
  • Business access remains open during business hours.
  • Moratoriums give businesses a break: Construction will pause in the Central Mall during the winter holidays and in the North and Central mall areas during Rose Festival.
  • Crews often work double shifts from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and some weekends to speed construction. Project staff will give nearby businesses and residents advance notice of any night work.

Transit service during construction

Effective January 14, 2007, TriMet and C-TRAN bus service moved off of the Portland Mall. Most bus lines now serve new stops located along 3rd and 4th avenues and Columbia and Jefferson streets. These changes will remain in effect through spring 2009. MAX Light Rail and Portland Streetcar service remains the same.
